McCain and the Tongue

October 4, 2008 — 2 Comments

If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
—James 1:26

The Washington Post offered a story about the decision of the McCain campaign to “ramp up” the character assinations on Senator Barack Obama:

“We’re going to get a little tougher,” a senior Republican operative said, indicating that a fresh batch of television ads is coming. “We’ve got to question this guy’s associations. Very soon. There’s no question that we have to change the subject here,” said the operative, who was not authorized to discuss strategy and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

McCain Plans Fiercer Strategy Against Obama.

Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?
—James 4:11–12

I have been around the political world to know that Christian values have little to nothing to do with the winning and losing of campaigns. It is next to impossible to love your opponent sacrificially in our current world of winners and losers, and difficult to maintain a sense of respect and dignity.

However, the decision by the McCain campaign to move from issues of policy and substance to issues of “associations” and relationships is nothing short of evil and desperate.

Look there are lots of reasons for folks to question Senator Obama’s candidacy and ability to serve in the highest office in the land. Most of them have to do with the difference in the political philosophies of Senator McCain and Senator Obama, a conversation that I would love to see happen in an upcoming debate. However, the decision to slander, to turn the focus from substance to fluff, is an appeal to the baser parts of our soul, a cynical belief that we will not pay attention and will vote out of gut based fears.

I wonder if Senator McCain is sleeping at night.

He sold his soul a long time ago to have a shot at the nomination. It was never a question of how low he’d go, just how long it would take to reach the bottom. I just hope people see through it this time.
